Leather Bag
Make your own leather handbag.
A workshop by Asaert.
Folding and hammering
your own leather handbag.
Griet aka A E S A E RT makes beautiful leather bags and hosted a series of workshops where you learn to make your own (very basic) leather handbag. We could choose between 2 colours and 2 models. Of course I went with black, and I chose the handbag over the cross shoulder/fanny pack. More info on http://www.aesaert.be/about.
With the right materials, tools and some basic skills, it’s actually not that hard to make a leather handbag. Having the talented Griet around was of course a big help as well. She cut the top of the bag for me, I hope my failed attempt hasn’t scarred her for life. Since the curve is on the front of the bag, I’m glad she stepped in and litterally saved the bag from me having a second try. I have never been great at cutting in straight lines, let alone free handed curves. I also had some troubles when hammering some rivets, because (and get this!) I was being too careful. I then smashed the things and was quite happy with the final result.
The bag is a bit small for my personal taste (and the pile of junk I like to carry around), but I’m actually quite glad to have it. Especially since I have a phone that no longer fits most pockets. Having made it myself only makes it more special.
