Nacre Mobile

Ocean X Childhood

I’ve always liked Nacre. Yep I had those turquoise earrings at 16. I love the sound the disks make when they brush against one anothrer. I was surprised to find Nacre garlands in Maison du Monde a while back. I took home a few and decided to sacrifice one to make a mobile to have that sound I so like. I used half of the disks of one garland and made knots where I’d cut them off. Yes, I mad knots in nylon threads. Yes there was a lot of swearing. I then used Sketch (yep, the UI design tool) to visualise possible arrangements and once I chose one, started making knots again.

I wanted to use driftwood to hang the nacre from, because #oceanvibes. But the the ones I found turned out to be too big or too small or too fragile. And then one day, after a storm, I found the perfect branch in my parents’ garden. It was ripped from one of their curly willows. They might not be the fantastic grandmother willow, but they were the closest thing I had in the garden when growing up so I’ve always been pretty fond of them.
